On this week at Manchester United: 150 goal striker sold, club legend signed for £1.5 million

Here's a look back at the history of Manchester United, specifically key events which happened years ago to this week.

1981 July 28th.

Michael Carrick midfielder 2006 to the present day was born in Wallsend, Tyne & Wear.

2006 July 28th.

Real Madrid finalised the signature of Ruud van Nistelrooy after the 30 year old goal scoring machine passed a medical at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Van Nistelrooy was transferred from PSV Eindhoven to Manchester United in 2001, costing £19m. Los Blancos were reported to have paid £10.2m for Nistelrooys signature.

The Dutch striker netted 150 goals in 219 appearances for United. To this date van Nistelrooys strike rate is 38 goals in 47 appearances a % of 80.9; surpassed in European matches only by Denis Law with a strike rate of 84.8%.

1996 July 29th.

United complete the signing of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer 17 years ago yesterday from Norwegian club Molde. United paid the relatively small fee of £1.5m for the baby faced assassins signature. Solskjaer over the 11 years he was a player at United went on to make 366 appearances including a record 150 from the bench.

Ole going onto net 126 goals in all competitions, one of which was highly important in extra - time in the Champions League final to ensure the Red Devils won the trophy in 1999.

2004 July 29th.

United say goodbye to Nicky Butt who was transferred to Newcastle United. Butt cost Newcastle United £2.5m bringing the curtain down on his 13 year spell at Old Trafford. Nicky Butt made 387 appearances for Manchester United scoring 26 goals.

1966 July 30th.

History shows that England famously beat West Germany 4-2 after extra time to win the Jules Rimet trophy in the World Cup in 1966 at Wembley Stadium.

However on the morning of the huge final United's Nobby Stiles a critical member of Alf Ramsey's Wingless Wonders left the England team Hotel in east London and attended mass in Golders Green.

Stiles prayers were heard from above and answered Geoff Hurst bagging a hatrick and the big headlines in the news. Few who were privileged to be watching will everforget Nobby Stiles victory ceremony on the hallowed Wembley turf. Magnificent. 

1994 July 30th.

Things never change, United were in Dublin for a friendly match. Ryan Giggs was at the corner flag about to take the kick. A young girl ran on to the pitch just as the Welshman was about to flight the ball she wrapped her arms around the United idol and kissed Giggs.

1995 July 31st.

The FA advised Manchester United that they were not allowed to play Eric Cantona who was suspended in behind closed doors games at the Cliff training ground.

The Football Association explained the mercurial Frenchman's suspension were include all games which included those played away from the public view.

2006 July 31st.

Michael Carrick completed his move from Tottenham Hotspurs in a transfer deal worth up to £18.6m.

Carrick was given the number 16 shirt which was previously worn by Irishman and fantastic captain Roy Keane.

Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney met for the first time since their World Cup quarter - final tie in Germany when the Portuguese wingman arrived for pre - season training at United's Carrington training headquarters.

Ronaldo was allowed extended leave following Portugal's World Cup tournament.

Their final game was the third - place play - off against hosts Germany which Portugal lost on the 8th of July. Manchester United increased the security to counter act against any adverse anger that Ronaldo might have attracted from unhappy fans.

1973 August 1st.

Tony Dunne was given a free transfer joining Bolton Wanderers, bringing to an end a 14 year career at Manchester United.

Dunne made his debut against Burnley on the 15th of October 1960 at Turf Moor, going on to record 534 full appearances and 1 substitute appearance, scoring 2 goals.

1988 August 1st.

Arthur Albiston brings a 16 year association with United to an end transferring to West Bromwich Albion under the guidance of ex United manager Ron Atkinson.

Arthur made 467 starts for United in addition to 18 subs appearances, scoring 7 goals. The consistent Scottish left-back made his debut for United in the League Cup against Manchester City in October 1974 at Old Trafford, beating the Citizens 1-0.

Albiston made his FA Cup debut amazingly against Liverpool in the final at Wembley in 1977 as a 19-year-old left back filling in for the injured Stewart Houston putting in a sterling performance to win the FA Cup beating Liverpool 2 -1.

1999 August 1st.

Manchester United 1 Arsenal 2 in the FA Charity Shield in what is the earliest start to the season in United's history. Dwight Yorke netted United's goal at Wembley.

1954 August 2nd.

Sammy McIlroy was born in Belfast performing for the Reds as a midfielder from 1971 to 1982.

McIlroy made his United debut in 1971 against Manchester City at City's then stadium Maine Road drawing the match 3 - 3, McIlroy scoring one goal.

The Northern Ireland went on to appear 391 times for United with an additional 28 substitute appearance's bagging 71 goals.

1957 August 2nd.

Ashley Grimes was born in Dublin today the midfielder performed for United during 1977-83.

Grimes made his debut appearance as a substitute against Birmingham City at St Andrews in the Football League Division 1 in 1977 aiding United to beat the Blue's 4 -1.

He went on play in 107 games, 30 of which were as substitute, hitting the back of the net 11 times.

2007 August 2nd.

Alan Smith is transferred to Newcastle United, Smudger had been unsettled at Manchester United and with transfer speculation that Carlos Tevez was to transfer to United from West Ham United, Smith thought it was time to move onto the Magpies.

The 26 year old made 61 appearances with 32 substitute appearance's, striking 12 goals.

1892 August 3rd.

Manchester United were called Newton Heath Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway Football Club in 1892.

The club removed the Lancashire and Yorkshire from the name at the start of 1892 - 93 season to simply be known as Newton Heath in their first venture into the football league.

1997 August 3rd.

In the FA Charity shield at Wembley United drew 1 -1 with Chelsea. Ronny Johnsen scoring in normal time for the Reds, former United striker Mark Hughes netting for Chelsea.

United however went on to beat the west Londoners in the penalty shoot - out 4 -2.

One other notable highlight was the name on the back of David Beckham's shirt reading as BECKAM.
