Doncaster Rovers seal big-name transfer, One Direction star Louis Tomlinson

Tomlinson has been given the number 28 shirt...

In a somewhat surprising coup, Doncaster Rovers have added pop star Louis Tomlinson of One Direction to their playing roster.

Tomlinson, 21, grew up local to Doncaster, has even featured in a charity match at Keepmoat Stadium and once worked for the Rovers on matchdays.

It is hoped the signing will boost money raised for charity Bluebell Wood. And a statement on the club's official website read: 'As part of the signing it is hoped that Louis will be able to appear in Rovers colours at some point this season in aid of Bluebell Wood and train with the lads.'

Tomlinson said: 'This has always been a childhood dream for me. I feel very honoured to have been asked to sign for Rovers and being able to help both the club and the amazing charity Bluebell Wood is what it’s all about.'

To even play football at semi-professional level takes far better than average skill, daily determination and high levels of fitness. While Tomlinson has signed for Doncaster Rovers, it remains to be seen if he has those three attributes as he is a 'non-contract' player who will feature on only an ad hoc basis.

One Direction produced hits such as Live While Were Young, More Than This and What Makes You Beautiful.
