Are West Brom about to pull off one of the signings of the summer?

West Bromwich Albion may be about to sign Diego Lugano from PSG.

August was a big month for West Brom last season, as they made a key addition which would transform their season in the loan addition of Romelu Lukaku.

While he has since returned to parent club Chelsea, a year on it is a player in central defence who could become the club's star capture of the off-season.

The Baggies had attempted to sign Fede Fernandez on loan, but after this deal fell through they have approached PSG about signing Diego Lugano instead.

Lugano, 32, is the Uruguayan international captain with 85 caps to his name, and will be hoping to play a key role at the 2014 World Cup.

It is this which makes him so keen on a move from French champions PSG, who have signed Marquinhos to add to Thiago Silva and Mamadou Sakho to compete for central defensive positions.

He fell out of favour last season and was loaned to Malaga in January. He perhaps had a lucky escape last summer when he was linked with a move to QPR.

But he could get his Premier League move after all, with West Brom reported to have opened talks with the defender.

Lugano would be an excellent addition to West Brom, a passionate and committed player who should thrive with the physical aspect of the division. Although the hot headed side of his game has somewhat calmed. Sent off seven times in his career, his last dismissal came back in 2010.

He would help add a South American spine to the team with last summer's Claudio Yacob playing a key role in central midfield.

The centre-back has just one year left on his contract and therefore would likely be available for around £3 million.

It's rare a 32-year-old defender could be a star addition to any team, but given Lugano's vast experience at international level and playing in top leagues around Europe, but in the Uruguayan that is just what West Brom fans should look forward to.

West Brom fans, what do you make of the latest player linked in?
