On this day: Dempsey move turns ugly, De Bruyne a loanee and Gnabry a pro

Clint Dempsey 2

On the 31st July 2012 what were the stories that dominated the football landscape? Including Liverpool, Fulham, Chelsea, West Ham United, Arsenal, Everton and Aston Villa.

With transfer rumours and gossip galore this morning revolving around the likes of Fabregas, Suarez, Bale, Rooney and pretty much everyone who is anyone sometimes it is nice to take a break from it all.

So to do so I am casting back to this exact day, the 31st July 2013, but a year earlier.

What were the main transfer tales from that day? What big events were happening in Premier League football?

Here are some of the big scoops from the 31st July 2012…

Swiss retreat

It was on this day a year ago that, then Fulham attacker, Clint Dempsey pulled out of a training camp with in Switzerland - as he tried to force through a move to Liverpool.

He did not travel with the Cottagers to Switzerland leaving Martin Jol facing the prospect of losing his player to the Anfield club.

In the end, it took a while for him to commit to a move but Dempsey rolled through the gates of a training ground on deadline day - ready to complete a medical and sign a deal with his new club…

Tottenham Hotspur.

We need to talk about Kevin

Chelsea allowed Belgian international Kevin De Bruyne go out on loan for the season to Werder Bremen this time last year - and 12 months ago it was hardly newsworthy.

But De Bruyne was excellent in the Bundesliga last season. This summer saw him linked with big money moves to Borussia Dortmund but Chelsea are ready to give him a go next season.

And the decision to send him on loan one more time seems to have paid off.

Carroll Hammer-man

It was on this day that West Ham produced the offer that eventually got them Liverpool striker Andy Carroll on loan. The Geordie was not keen on a switch to London last summer but is now a permanent player at Upton Park - just one year down the line.

Also in the news this day…

- German talent Serge Gnabry signed his first professional contract with Arsenal.

- Arsenal flogged Manuel Almunia to Watford.

- It was a day of returns - as James Collins went back to West Ham United while Steven Pienaar returned to Everton.
