After two and a half frustrating years in England, Edin Dzeko might be about to finally get a real chance to shine as Manchester City’s first choice striker at the start of next season, with new manager Manuel Pellegrini calling the Bosnian his main striker after some excellent pre-season performances.
"We could've signed other players but I consider [Dzeko] the main striker of the team and I'm sure his performance along the season will be really good," Pellegrini said at a press conference in Munich.
"I very much trust him and I can say that every other player that have come are a support for a squad that needs to have more than one player in every position."
The quotes from Pellegrini are surprising in that having signed Alvaro Negredo and Stevan Jovetic this summer, and with Dzeko unhappy at playing a mostly bit part role last year, the 27-year-old was expected by many to leave Manchester City.
However if Manchester City’s new manager is to start the year with Dzeko as his number, it could prove an excellent move, as he has the ability to be a star man in the Premier League next season.
Despite mostly starting from the bench over the past two seasons, Dzeko has scored 34 goals for City, and was their top scorer in the Premier League last season.
He has the physical presence to act as a reference point for the rest of their attack, and the technical ability to link with their array of skillful attacking midfielders. With Jesus Navas also arriving this summer, Dzeko could link well with a more traditional winger than City have generally used in his time at the club.
There are still doubts over whether Dzeko is good enough to lead the line at City, and with Sergio Aguero on the books along with Negredo and Jovetic, he will not stay in the team long if he does not perform. However Dzeko has all the attributes to be a superb player for City next season, and Pellegrini is right to give him a chance as first choice.
