Chelsea latest: Including potential £40m Rooney bid and Courtois

A round-up of news and views relating to Chelsea over the past 24 hours.

Chelsea have arrived in America for their four-match pre-season tour, with their first game coming up on Thursday against Inter in Indianapolis. Several players who featured in the Confederations Cup, including Juan Mata and David Luiz, have joined up with the suqad for the first time this summer.

Chelsea are reportedly weighing up a £40million bid for Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney, who remains their top transfer target. Chelsea had a first bid of around £27million turned down earlier this month, and are prepared to keep trying for the England international until the end of the transfer window, with Manchester United so far unwilling to let Rooney leave.

Former Chelsea player Ricardo Carvalho has praised Jose Mourinho, saying that the Blues manager’s desire to win is what makes him stand out as among the best in the world. Carvalho played under Mourinho at Chelsea as well as at Real Madrid.

Thibaut Courtois has said he hopes to perform even better on loan at Atletico Madrid this year than he did last season, when he won the Zamora award in La Liga, which is awarded to the goalkeeper who concedes the fewest goals. This will be Courtois third year in a row on loan at the Spanish side, and he has become one of the most highly rated young keepers in Europe during that time.

Barcelona midfielder Xavi has praised David Luiz amid rumours that the Spanish side are preparing a bid for the Chelsea defender. Bayern Munich have ruled out a move for the Brazilian defender this summer, but Barcelona are keen to bolster their defensive resources, and have identified Luiz as one of their top targets.

PSG have reportedly entered the race for Portuguese youngster Bruma, who has been linked with a move to Chelsea this summer. The Blues apparently made a bid of £8million for the 18-year-old, but his situation has become complicated due to a row with Sporting LIsbon about his contract.

On HITC today we look at the rumours surrounding Jackson Martinez’ future at Porto, and also ask if Chelsea could use Fernando Torres in a deal for Ever Banega.
