All the latest news, views and transfer rumours from the Etihad…
All eight goals came in a remarkable first half, with the Blues going ahead after just three minutes through David Silva. Micah Richards and Aleksandar Kolarov made it 3-0 before a double from the rejuvenated Edin Dzeko gave the Italians a mountain to climb.
That they almost did is testament to their refusal to give in, as two quick goals from former City target Stephen El Shaarawy and a third from Andrea Petagna gave them every chance of overturning the deficit in the second half.
However, that was to be the last of the goals, as the second 45 minutes saw changes and a drop in tempo.
Manuel Pellegrini’s side will now face either Bayern Munich or Sao Paulo in the final.
A player from Bayern’s great rivals Borussia Dortmund reportedly rejected a move to the Etihad this summer.
Polish midfielder Jakub Blaszczykowski is said to have attracted interest from both City and Juventus, but chose to sign a new deal with the Champions League finalists.
“I took into account many factors,” he said. “It was important that my family feel happy in Dortmund. We know the City, the people, we have friends.”
Not that City will lose much sleep over the snub, having brought in Jesus Navas, Fernandinho, Alvaro Negredo and Stevan Jovetic, with rumours of more to follow.
One player reportedly going nowhere is captain Vincent Kompany. Reports claim City are readying themselves for a bid from Barcelona for the Belgian defender, after the Spanish side missed out on Thiago Silva.
But the report includes previous quotes from the player revealing his excitement at the years ahead.
“My family is happy and there are so many more trophies to win at this club,” Kompany said, “that is why it makes it so special.”
City will hope he feels the same 12 months on…should Barcelona come calling.
