This summer French side Lyon have once again been shedding off big wages in order to pay the bill on a long protracted stadium build that has made Jean-Michel Aulas a very tetchy figure.
The club have already allowed Dejan Lovren to exit this summer and are said to be ready to listen to offers on the likes of Bafatembi Gomis, Lisandro Lopez and Yoann Gourcuff.
Which is where Arsene Wenger comes in.
Wenger is reportedly a long -term admirer of Gourcuff’s natural talent. When he was the star of the show for Bordeaux under Laurent Blanc the attacking midfielder was being compared to the great Zinedine Zidane.
But ever since he made the switch to Les Gones times have changed - and the waters have got choppy.
The French international has suffered number of niggling injury problems as well as discipline issues.
Three years now Gourcuff has disappointed and this summer the former AC Milan starlet is finally expected to move on and clear his £90k-a-week wages from the bill.
But where could he go?
Arsenal remain to be linked with the player - due to Wenger’s ‘I want one’ mentality when it comes down to the 27-year-old.
Capped 24 times by France and potentially available for a very diverse range of clubs it is expected a transfer battle could be about to commence at the Stade Gerland.
But it could be he makes a very surprising move indeed - to ambitious French outfit Lorient.
Arsenal have strong links with the side from Brittany but if Wenger does want his man he may have a battle with the Lorient gaffer - who just so happens to be the players dad.
"As I have said at one time that it was not possible, so now, in the current context, it has become possible.’’
Yes, if Jeremie Aliadiere stays with the club that is - amongst mounting interest from Marseille and St Etienne, then he and Gourcuff would be pairing up on the same team.
Two Frenchman who have always been highly rated by Wenger could now be set to play on the same team; in a deal that could see Lorient pushing into the top six in 2013-14.
