Five facts about Celtic new-boy Derk Boerrigter

Celtic Champions League

We bring you a quick fact-file on the talents of Celtic's fourth summer addition.

Celtic have snapped up their fourth signing of the summer, after Dutchman Derk Boerrigter arrived at the club - joining Amido Balde, Virgil van Dijk and Steven Mouyokolo in making the move to Parkhead this summer.

Boerrigter joins on a four-year-deal from Dutch champions Ajax, for a fee believed to be in the region of £3 million.

Boerrigter has recently found himself struggling for football in Amsterdam - largely due to the emergence of Viktor Fischer.

And I think it is a bargain for The Bhoys to snap up the 26-year-old for this price - but who is the winger?

Here are five facts about the latest player to join Neil Lennon’s men.

1) Boerrigter has now left Ajax on two separate occasions. Despite actually starting his youth career with Quick’20 and then FC Twente he was at Ajax between 2005 and 2007. He struggled for first-team football and was allowed to join PEC Zwolle in 2007. He was then re-signed by Ajax in 2011.

2) Boerrigter may have never played for the Netherlands, but he has been called up to the Oranje squad as recently as 2011. After his good form both at RKC Waalwijk and Ajax he was called into the squad to face Switzerland and Germany - however a back injury got in the way of his plans.

3) It would be fair to say that Boerrigter is not your average winger. At 6ft 4ins and powerfully built he looks more like a bullish centre forward at times - attributes that have often helped him rather than hinder. Essentially, he is not your average run-of-the-mill, nimble, trickey wide-man - expect dynamism.

4) Ajax have surprisingly sold him when he was coming into good form. He recently scored a hat-trick in ten minutes against former side RKC in a pre-season friendly.

5) Celtic have completed the transfer just in time. They managed to get the deal done before yesterday’s Champions League signings deadline. That means he is available to feature against Swedish outfit IF Elfsborg tonight - if necessary.

Here he is in action…
