7. 1975 - Jimmy Hoffa, one of the most influential American labour leaders of the 20th century, disappears in Detroit, Michigan, never to be heard from again

8. 1979 - James Taylor plays a free concert in New York's Central Park to help the city's campaign to restore the park's Sheep Meadow

9. 1987 - The Government sues the Sunday Telegraph over secret service memoirs

10. 1991 - The US and the Soviet Union sign the Start treaty to reduce stockpiles of nuclear warheads by about a third

11. 1993 - Former Wales footballer Mickey Thomas from Mochdore is jailed for 18 months for his involvement in supplying counterfeit money
