Having conceded defeat in his chase of Barcelona midfielder Francesc Fabregas, Manchester United manager David Moyes will reportedly turn his attention toward the Catalan club's La Liga rivals Real Madrid, targeting former Tottenham Hotspur playmaker Luka Modric, according to the Daily Star, who also report that the Scot will raid his former club - Everton - for rampaging big man Marouane Fellaini.
United's sole summer purchase has, thus far, been limited to defender Guillermo Valera, from Penarol, who was signed prior to Moyes succeeding Sir Alex Ferguson. In comparison, there has been mass expenditure around Europe, particularly in France, where big-spenders Paris Saint Germain and AS Monaco have put a combined £175 million into the transfer market.
'That is not something Manchester United are frightened of,' said Moyes.
'Manchester United are more than happy to compete with all of the teams. There has been a change in the dynamic because of PSG coming on the scene recently. That has altered things but Manchester United will always compete. One thing United has got is the history. It has got the name. It has got the success.'
Moyes will no doubt be hoping that history, name and success can lure Modric and Fellaini to the club.
