A round up of the latest news and transfer stories about Liverpool.
Liverpool legend John Barnes says the club must sell Luis Suarez soon if they are to have any hope of replacing him. Suarez continues to be linked with a move to Arsenal.
“We’ve seen in the past when transfers go down to the last minute that it doesn’t help anybody, especially for a club like Liverpool,” said Barnes.
The saga has turned a little bitter with reports that Edinson Cavani has suggested Suarez doesn’t rate Liverpool’s new signings this summer.
“With the other top teams in England adding players, he doesn’t think Liverpool have the resources to break into the Champions League spots,” said Cavani.
In more positive news for the club, the Liverpool Echo has confirmed that the club have been in contact with Benfica over a loan deal for defender Lorenzo Melgarejo. Rumours started yesterday that the 22-year-old was being targeted by Brendan Rodgers and Liverpool should have a chance to sign him permanently when any loan deal expires.
Liverpool’s Real Madrid target Alvaro Morata is set to be offered a new contract by the Spanish club, ending speculation over a possible move to Anfield. The youngster was thought to be on the radar of Brendan Rodgers but Real Madrid president Florentino Perez is a big fan of the forward and has pushed for a new deal.
Liverpool are set to renew their interest in FC Schalke defender Kyriakos Papadopoulos. The Greek star was suggested as a possible replacement for Martin Skrtel at the back end of last season and Liverpool are now apparently ready to make a £13 million offer for the centre back.
The importance of that deal for Papadopoulos will increase, especially if the links suggesting Skrtel could join Napoli don’t go away. Napoli boss Rafa Benitez is thought to be keen on the Slovakian having already signed Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina on a season long loan deal ahead of the new season.
Striker Iago Aspas says he is aiming for a starting place in the Liverpool team for the start of the Premier League season. The new arrival has done well since moving from Celta Vigo and has been doing double training sessions in order to get himself fit and ready for the pace and tempo of the Premier League.
Liverpool are reportedly playing hard ball in Bolton’s attempts to sign midfielder Jay Spearing. He spent last season on loan at the Reebok Stadium, making 38 appearances but a permanent deal could be in doubt as Dougie Freedman has suggested Liverpool are reluctant to meet in the middle over price.
Liverpool’s youth team coach Michael Beale has given an insight into the way younger players are treated at the club, encouraged to copy the first team and the methods Brendan Rodgers has instilled over the senior side. Liverpool have one of the best youth team setups in the country, regularly producing teenagers available for selection in the first team.
