All the latest news, views and transfer rumours from the Etihad…
“It’s not absolutely complete, but it’s very near to being complete.”
Those were the words of Manuel Pellegrini when talking about his Manchester City squad last week.
And as speculation continues about who his final signing/s may be, Sky Sports has published an interesting analysis on both potential defensive targets and the possibility of City’s younger players breaking through in the coming campaign.
One defender seemingly not on his way to the Etihad is Thiago Silva, following the news that he has signed a new contract with PSG.
Despite the story citing City as an interested party, the truth is Barcelona seemed the Brazilian’s most likely destination had he moved on this summer.
The Spanish champions are in need of a new centre-back to cover for the ageing Carles Puyol but it won’t be Silva. City meanwhile seem far more likely to sign a player from Barcelona’s fierce rivals Real Madrid, in the form of Pepe.
From potential incomings to possible outgoings, with Gareth Barry revealing he is unsure of his future at the club.
With just a year left on his current deal, the England midfielder has been the subject of mixed speculation in recent months.
But speaking of his current situation he said, “I haven’t heard anything about a new deal from the club, so it looks as though my contract will run out next summer and I’ll have to take it from there.”
Referring to the competition for places – made even stronger with the arrival of Fernandinho – Barry knows the task ahead of him will be a difficult one. However he has revealed that Pellegrini wants to keep him at the Blues next season.
“The manager has spoken to me,” Barry added. “He told me that he sees a place for me in his squad as he wants two quality players in every position.”
That fact surely means Edin Dzeko is not for sale, especially after his goal-scoring form in pre-season and the fact the manager has already spoken of his importance to the club. But that hasn’t stopped reports linking the Bosnian frontman with a possible move to Tottenham.
With Spurs inching closer to a deal for Roberto Soldado, the likelihood of a move for Dzeko is slim. But stories today claim he is being considered as an alternative should the move for the Spaniard fall through.
