From first choice on the team sheet to first number on the team shirt!
Barnet player-manager Edgar Davids, 40, long distinctive for his dreadlocked hair, hopes to set a new trend; that of outfield players adorning the number one on their club shirts.
Having kitted out for European giants such as Ajax, AC Milan, Juventus, Barcelona and Internazionale, Davids' career has also seen him represent Crystal Palace and, most recently, take up the coaching reigns of Barnet. He continues to have his own on-pitch influence at the Bees as he sometimes switches the dugout for the turf where he barks management instruction to his players, who call him 'Mr Davids'.
'That [one] is my number for the season,' said Davids, a former Champions League winner, told the Barnet Times. 'I am going to start this trend.'
First-choice goalkeepers are normally the ones to hold Davids' new squad number, however, Barnet shot-stopper Graham Stack, formerly of Arsenal, holds no hard feelings toward his manager.
'We have decided the squad numbers and I am keeping the same as last season; so I’ll be 29. Squad numbers mean nothing to me and I’ve had a few over the years. So it is not an issue. Edgar Davids has asked to wear number one, he asked me what number I want and I said I didn’t mind.
'I don’t think what matters you wear,' added Stack. 'All that matters is that you are in the team and playing.'
Davids has already worn the number one during pre-season as he featured for 88 minutes against MK Dons, a game in which the club suffered a 4-1 loss.
