All the news, views and transfer rumours from Old Trafford this weekend…
As the transfer speculation continues, Manchester United have been linked with a number of targets both old and new. To see our United-specific transfer news you can read Saturday’s report here and Sunday’s report here.
One player long linked with a move to Old Trafford is Cesc Fabregas, but David Moyes may be about to admit defeat in his attempts to sign the Barcelona midfielder after two bids were rejected by the Catalans.
Speaking on the club’s pre-season tour, Moyes said, “I couldn’t tell you if there will be another bid.
“Obviously we will take stock of it and consider what we are going to do next.”
That he then praised the players currently at his disposal sounded like a man preparing his fans to make do with what they have got. Although he did clarify he hoped to add to the squad this summer.
“Undoubtedly we are hoping to add to it,” he said. “I am quite confident we will do, certainly before the window shuts.”
“Quite confident” – United fans will no doubt be excited by such an emphatic declaration of intent.
New United coach Phil Neville has praised Moyes’s drive and determination.
“David has been preparing for this job all his life,” Neville said, “and whether it be at Preston or Everton he has, at the back of his mind, always been thinking that one day he wanted to manage the best.”
Moyes will now be hoping all that preparation pays off; something that will be aided if he can call on a fully-fit Nemanja Vidic.
The club captain is in line to play for a United XI against Crewe tomorrow evening, after missing United’s pre-season tour as a result of sciatica.
Should the Serbian defender overcome his recent injury problems, stability in defence will be one less problem for the new boss to worry about.
As will a feud with Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho, something Moyes has dismissed out of hand.
Talk was of mind games earlier this month, but the Scot has quashed talk of it being anything more than harmless fun.
“I remember when he lost his job I wrote him a letter,” he said. “So for people to say there is any feud is wrong.”
And finally, a player seen as a potential alternative to Fabregas excelled for Borussia Dortmund last night, as Jurgen Klopp’s side beat Bayern Munich 4-2 in the German Super Cup.
Ilkay Gundogan scored one goal, dominated play throughout and was awarded the man-of-the-match award.
And while stories have linked United with a move for the midfielder, in truth he is a vital part of Klopp’s side, and there is little chance of them selling him as they attempt to wrestle the Bundesliga title back from their rivals.
