It is the start of the 2011-12 Premier League season and fears are growing at Arsenal that this season will not be a success. A relatively uninspiring pre-season and the departures of Gael Clichy and Cesc Fabregas has left everyone on edge.
The club has drawn the first game of the season 0-0 with Newcastle United and will soon lose 8-2 to Manchester United as an injury stricken squad is taken apart at Old Trafford.
The game was a fairly drab affair until Kenny Dalglish unleashed his plan B on to the field of play on 75 minutes.
Suarez entered the fray like a rabid dog and chewed and scraped at everything Arsenal in order to get Liverpool the win.
It worked; after hassling Ignasi Miquel Arsenal made a hash of their defending and the ball ricocheted off of Aaron Ramsey into the back of the net for 1-0; just minutes after Suarez’s introduction.
Suarez continued to impress throughout and he got his rewards; tapping in to an open net after good work with Raul Meireles in the 90th minute.
Four days later Samir Nasri left for Manchester City and the mood at Arsenal was at an all-time low.
People criticised, while others simply asked one question. How can Arsenal continue not to spend, when a player signed for £25.5 million by one of their Premier League rivals just entered the fray and demolished them?
Wenger went on to strengthen his team at the end of August; the arrivals of Mikel Arteta and Per Mertesacker most telling.
However people still asked when Arsenal would finally start spending big; finally start using the vast savings they have accumulated over the years.
It seems that two years later that time has finally come; and Wenger is casting his mind back 23 months to the man who got the debate roaring into life in 2011.
£25.5 million for Suarez ended up looking a snip for Liverpool and if Arsenal were to spend double that it would still be worth an investment.
This is a player who changes games, who thrives under pressure, who isn’t afraid to do everything in his power to win.
That is the type of player Arsenal need, miss and quite clearly want.
But they will have to pay for him.
Do you think Wenger decided he wanted Suarez back in 2011?
