The track I'll be opening my next DJ set with
I open with songs that had terrible distribution, no promotion, on a mom and pop label, but that are amazing. I'll do that to show you that charts don't matter.
The track I always play to rescue a dancefloor
It's no longer black music or white music or American music; today's audience wants so much more. The music inspector says, "This is pop and this is rock", and they put music in well-guarded cubicles. I go in there with a spear and trash the cubicles, and say, "All of y'all are coming with me."
The track that currently gets the most rewinds
I don't like repeating a song. It's like making love: once you're in, you're in. The high ain't going to get higher than that. So a new high comes from a pop record going into a jazz record into a blues record, so it's a series of highs, a series of ah-ah-ah [makes orgasm noise]. That's what I stand for.
The track I'd play to show off my eclectic tastes
Hip-hop, from a DJ's point of view, is playing the greatest drummers in the world from as many genres as possible. I try it all, because I'm a servant at the end of the day. I'm trying to work out: do you like steak, fish, lobster, chicken? If you like chicken and I gave you lobster, I'm sorry, but I just wanted to see if you'd like it.
The track I'd play at my auntie's wedding
Weddings are the most challenging: you've got little children. That song with that great profanity in it, I can't play it. But you need to get the children out of the room: I swear when I play!
The track that got me out of bed this morning
Nothing. Silence is a great chance to think about a set. I meditate; I put the brain in park, in neutral.
The best track by my favourite new artist
[He hems and haws for nearly a minute] I like Kendrick Lamar.
The ideal festival track
Festivals allow me to play electronic for a couple of minutes in my set. Funky electronic, like Diplo: it feels like Planet Rock, but newer.
The track I'd play at my funeral
I want my records to be melted and made into my casket.
