Could Arsenal legend convince Bernard to turn down four other clubs interested?

Gilberto Silva

Could the presence of Gilberto Silva give Arsenal the upper hand in this summer pursuit?

Brazilian international Bernard has been one of Europe’s most sought after talents this summer. It started out with interest from Chelsea but that has dissipated into thin air.

Then came the strong interest from Tottenham Hotspur; looking to add him to the likes of Paulinho and Sandro in the clubs growing Brazilian contingent.

Shakhtar Donetsk have also been linked with him for the whole summer while it seems international team-mate Hulk has been doing the number on him in regards to talking about a Porto move.

The most recent interest however has stemmed from Liverpool. After a deal for Henrikh Mkhitaryan fell by the wayside moving for Bernard simply made sense for Brendan Rodgers.

But what none of these teams have in their favour is what fellow suitors Arsenal have in … well… their arsenal.

If the Gunners are serious about snapping up Bernard this summer then they have a club legend who could probably do a big favour talking the young lad into a move to North London; the red half that is.

Gilberto Silva played for Arsenal for six years between 2002 and 2008 and in that time, judging by what I read in research for this article, he became something of a legend for the Arsenal faithful.

An uncompromising but exceptionally skilful central midfielder his partnership with Patrick Vieira was one of the clubs most memorable.

Struggling with injury and the sands of time Gilberto left the club for Panathinaikos; another team where he is now counted as something of a cult hero.

He then went back to Brazil, first with Gremio, and now with former team … you guessed it … Atletico Mineiro.

Gilberto has been playing at centre back for the club in their historic Copa Libertadores triumph; after which Bernard’s agent accidentally let slip his clients plans to leave this summer.

And if a team stumps up £25 million for the pint-sized wonder then he is all theirs according to the clubs hierarchy.

But with five teams all said to be vying for his signature it could end up being a case of who has his ear; something Gilberto might be able to hand to them on a plate.

Can Gilberto help Arsenal sign Bernard?
