Liverpool have been strongly linked with Barcelona forward Cristian Tello over the past 12 months but not long ago it seemed that once again he would be staying with Barcelona.
The 21-year-old talent was linked with Liverpool last summer and again in the January transfer window because his then current deal was expiring in six months’ time.
In the end however he signed a new deal with the club and we all thought; ‘that’s the end of that’.
Afraid not because Tello is once again doing the rounds as a potential Liverpool target; and it is easy to see why.
Fast, strong and technically superb he is certainly a player Brendan Rodgers could take a shine to and with Christian Eriksen talk diluting Tello could be the perfect alternative; and a cheap one at that.
The Barcelona forward had a release clause written into his new deal, a clause that is similar to that in the contract for Thiago Alcantara.
It stipulates that should he not play a certain amount of games for the club he can leave if a team makes an £8.6 million offer for his services. It is a clause that is now active.
But wait … wasn’t this all sorted the other day?
It was reported that Tello would be signing a new deal at the club imminently which would remove said clause but then, Tito Villanova the clubs manager stepped down to undergo more extreme treatment for his cancer.
Since then the talks have stalled and it is believed that new gaffer Gerardo Martino wants to run the rule over the player himself before deciding if he even wants to keep the Spanish international.
The main stumbling block would actually be convincing Tello to leave; as he has reportedly had offers this summer. Barcelona’s director of football Andoni Zubizarreta has stated that:
"Tello has a release clause of €10 million [£8.6m] and he had offers. He has said he wants to stay, though."
Tello is a Barcelona native so may struggle with the concept of leaving but with Neymar arriving this summer his chances of first-team football have certainly not improved.
And leaving the club must have at one point popped up as a possibility; I mean he has a release clause in his contract.
It seems that for once the club is not the hard part; but convincing the player will be.
Because at £8.6 million Tello is quite frankly a must-buy.
Would you like to see Tello at Anfield next season?
