On this day: Mancini put nail in coffin, Chelsea welcomed Brazil star and Cazorla edged closer

On the 26th July 2012 what were the stories that dominated the football landscape? Including Chelsea, Manchester City, Arsenal, Norwich and Spurs.

With transfer rumours and gossip galore this morning revolving around the likes of Fabregas, Suarez, Bale Rooney and pretty much everyone who is anyone sometimes it is nice to take a break from it all.

So to do so I am casting back to this exact day, the 26th July 2013, but a year earlier.

What were the main transfer tales from that day? What big events were happening in Premier League football?

Here are some of the big scoops from the 26th July 2012…

Mancini’s Manchester Moans

Late in the evening on that Thursday Roberto Mancini was dominating the headlines on most the sport papers. The Manchester City manager was laying into the hierarchy at the club, in particular Brian Marwood, and their slack approach to transfer negotiations; in particular regards to Robin van Persie.

“For this question, speak to the man in charge. I’m not in charge of this. We have a man [Marwood] who works for this and we hope that he can do a good job. This season will not be easy. It will be harder than last year and for this reason, we need to improve our team. Van Persie is a fantastic player but it is difficult to talk about him because he is an Arsenal player, not our player.”

In the end it was rivals United who got RvP and went on to win the league. Mancini still rues the decision not to go all out for the Dutchman as the main reason they were beaten to the title in 2012-13 and nowadays finds himself unemployed because of that failure.

This was the day it all started to unravel for the suave Italian.

Chelsea win an Oscar

It was on this day that the final touches were put together on a deal to sign Brazilian international Oscar from Internacional.

The 20-year-old was not expected to play a massive role for the club in his debut season despite his £25 million price-tag.

In the end he proved a vital member of the team; featuring in 64 games. That almost equalled the amount of games (70) he had played in his entire career.

Arsenal get Cazorla-rific

Mikel Arteta was speaking that day of the imminent arrival of a one Santi Cazorla. The club had agreed personal terms and a fee with the player from the troubled La Liga side Malaga with a deal seemingly just hours away.

It was actually a fortnight later they signed the player who went on to be their star of the campaign with 12 goals and 16 assists from 49 appearances for The Gunners in 2012-13.

Also in the news that day ….

- Norwich City wrapped up the transfer of Robert Snodgrass from Leeds for a £1.5 million fee. He went on to play a crucial role in The Canaries solid campaign.

- Arsenal reportedly joined the race for Gaston Ramirez. The Uruguayan eventually joined Southampton.

- Tottenham were linked with Porto winger Christian Atsu … a year later and they still are.
