Liverpool might worry about Luis Suarez’ history of forcing through moves

The Liverpool striker is reportedly keen to move to Arsenal this summer, and Suarez has taken matters into his own before to secure a transfer from Groningen.

Wherever Luis Suarez ends up plying his trade at the end of this summer, it is clear that he has left an indelible stain on his relationship with the Liverpool fans, who had, up until this summer, been the controversial striker’s most vocal defenders.

In attempting to push through a move to Premier League rivals Arsenal, Suarez is likely to burn every bridge at Anfield, but it should not be a surprise to Liverpool fans, as the Uruguayan has left his previous two clubs under a cloud.

His relationship with the Ajax fans was still relatively strong when he completed his move to Liverpool, but that was surprising considering he left the Dutch club during an 11 match ban for biting an opponent.

However Suarez made his move to Ajax after appealing to the Dutch Football Association when previous club Groningen turned down a €3.5million bid.

The Dutch FA arbitration committee turned down his case, but Groningen subsequently accepted an improved offer of €7.5million to see Suarez move to Ajax.

This could be significant in the current transfer saga if Suarez and his agent, Pere Guardiola, have a different opinion to Liverpool on the £40million clause in his contract.

Liverpoll have said the clause only means they have to notify Suarez if a club makes a bid over £40million, as Arsenal did recently, even if only by a pound. However there are reports that Suarez and his agent believe the clause acts a release clause due to Liverpool’s failure to qualify for the Champions League.

If Suarez is prepared to do everything he can to force through a move the dispute over the clause could get ugly, and his past actions at Groningen suggest the striker will not be afraid to involve football authorities in a dispute, further souring his relationship with Liverpool and perhaps making his position at the club untenable.
