Liverpool clearly do not want to lose out on Luis Suarez, even their owner John W Henry has made that clear with his not-so-cryptic tweet on the subject on Wednesday morning.
£40 million plus £1 did not do the trick, with the Reds holding out for at least £50 million according to reports.
Liverpool old boy John Aldridge last week said he would demand £15 million plus Jack Wilshere, to begin negotiations, likely forgetting that the born and bred Arsenal fan would not consider a move to Merseyside.
But it got us wondering, what if - a purely hypothetical scenario - Arsenal placed the next big star into a deal.
Gedion Zelalem is the 16-year-old prodigy stealing the headlines on the club's pre-season tour, dazzling the aforementioned Wilshere who had this to say about his precocious talent:
"He sees passes that not a lot of players can. ‘You think “what’s he doing?” and suddenly someone is in. He’s only 16 and he’s an exciting player.
‘It won’t be long before he’s ready. He’s so comfortable on the ball. Even in training he’s a nightmare to play against. He keeps the ball away from you and shields it. He’s not very big but he’s strong.
"He drifts in and out of players. He’s quite a strong lad and technically he’s right up there. He’s a good one for the future."
Zelalem actually made his competitive debut for Arsenal's under-21 team at Anfield in a late season clash with Liverpool, and did not look out of place, helping set up a goal for Serge Gnabry.
He is very highly rated, coveted by both USA and Germany for who he is eligible to play for at international level, and would be exactly the sort of talented young player Brendan Rodgers would be desperate to add to his burgeoning young side.
So if Liverpool turned the tables on Arsenal, and said 'yes you can have Suarez, but only if you add Zelalem onto that £40 million offer', what would and what should the Gunners do?
Arsenal clearly would not want to give up a talented star of the future to a rival, but surely they need a top class striker even more.
Liverpool are in a position still where they can make demands. Whether a still to really prove himself 16-year-old is worth giving up Suarez for is not the issue, they would have £40 million plus a star of the future.
What would you do if Liverpool turned the tables and demanded Zelalem? Liverpool fans would you take an offer of £40 million plus the teenager?
