United boss David Moyes is reportedly turning his attentions away from Francesc Fabregas and toward a BVB midfielder…
After top brass at Barcelona thrice denied Manchester United the right to negotiate personal terms with cultured passer Francesc Fabregas, 26, the Premier League champions have reportedly instead targeted Borussia Dortmund midfield starlet Ilkay Gundogan.
Like Fabregas, Gundogan possesses a wide variety of passes in his footballing repertoire. It is testament to his vision and positional sense that he is able to sit deep and ping long balls forward, roam further afield with his own dribbling skill-set or play crisp, short and incisive passes in the final third for the front-men to finish off.
While Belgium bruiser Marouane Fellaini has perpetually been linked with following his former Everton mentor Moyes to the Theatre of Dreams at Old Trafford, it is believed the Scotsman would prefer a cultured, technical player rather than one who can brag a hulking physical stature.
Bids of £26 million and £29m failed to coax Barca into selling Fabregas, but United are confident of landing Gundogan - dubbed the new Mesut Oezil - for as little as £20m, according to Metro.
While Shinji Kagawa has been rumoured with a transfer back to Borussia, the Japan international has performed well enough during pre-season to convince Moyes that he deserves another season to adapt to Premier League life. It also means that, should they sign Gundogan, a strong midfield partnership at Dortmund will be reunited in Manchester.
Personal terms would not prove a laborious negotiation, either, as Gundogan, just two years ago, labelled United his 'dream club'.
