Arsenal made a renewed attempt to sign Luis Suarez last night, submitting an offer of £40 million plus £1.
The extra pound was in the hope it could trigger a release clause in his contract, but instead all it meant was that Liverpool had to inform Suarez of the bid, and they rejected it out of hand.
It seems relations between the clubs have taken a turn for the worst because of the offer.
Liverpool had apparently said privately they would only begin to consider offers over £40 million, and Arsenal seem to have taken that a bit too literally.
Liverpool owner John W Henry was clearly a bit irked by the bid, taking the unusual step of commenting on transfer business via Twitter this morning.
His message was simple, and quite to the point.
What do you think they're smoking over there at Emirates?— John W. Henry (@John_W_Henry) July 24, 2013
At time of writing, just over an hour of him posting, it had already been retweeted around the world almost 20,000 times.
Brendan Rodgers said previously he values Suarez in the same category as his international teammate Edinson Cavani, who just cost £55 million.
That sort of valuation is sure to price Arsenal out, and it seems Liverpool have no current intention of selling.
Where does this leave the transfer saga?
