Manchester United have endured a rocky start to their pre-season campaign, which could have provided the club’s main rivals with ample ammunition to pile the pressure on heading into the new season.
Mourinho’s focus appears to be on the other team from Manchester, Manchester City, with the Portuguese coach piling the pressure onto Manuel Pellegrini, suggesting they will be title favourites for the cash they have spent this summer.
“Navas and Negredo are world champions, European champions, both 27. Jovetic, for more than two years, has been one of the best in Italian football - People said: 'You buy this, you spend that, you buy the title,' so I hope now it is on the other side,” said Mourinho.
How that benefits United is quite simple, it takes the emphasis and attention away from them, hinting that Mourinho sees City as the main threat or at least an equal threat to Chelsea’s Premier League title push next season.
The Portuguese coach rightly points out the fact City have spent a lot of cash already this summer, as they tool up to try and wrestle the Premier League title back from Manchester United.
David Moyes won’t care one little bit if United’s main rivals for their Premier League crown are talking about each other because it’s very much an Old Trafford thing just to get the head down and work hard.
Moyes’ job at United would be substantially more difficult if he was being asked questions about various things Mourinho had said about United, every single time he sat in front of the press.
United and Chelsea do have that obvious connection at the moment because of Wayne Rooney, but it still looks as though there is a good chance Rooney will stay at United heading into the new season, which is going to place more pressure on Chelsea’s younger players.
Manuel Pellegrini doesn’t seem too concerned about getting involved in wars of words against City’s main rivals, but Mourinho has never been one to shy away from the odd mind game.
It’s just fortunate for United that in this case, it’s not them as the subject of Mourinho’s comments, at a time when Mourinho could easily try and pile the pressure onto Moyes in public with comments about United’s pre-season results and also various ways he could try and poach Rooney from Old Trafford.
United are yet to show their hand with regards to signings this summer but if Mourinho isn’t talking about them, they don’t have any need to get involved in distracting mind games.
What do you make of Mourinho’s mind games? Do you expect Pellegrini to respond?
