2. 1914 - Austria and Hungary issue an ultimatum to Serbia after the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand, precipitating World War I

3. 1952 - Egyptian military officers, led by Gamal Abdel Nasser, overthrow King Farouk I

4. 1967 - One of the worst riots in U.S. history breaks out on 12th Street in the heart of Detroit. By the time it was quelled, 43 people are dead, 342 injured, and nearly 1,400 buildings have been burned

5. 1974 - The military government in Greece collapses and former Prime Minister Constantine Karamanlis is invited to return

6. 1984 - Miss America, Vanessa Williams, turns in her crown after it is discovered that nude photos of her had appeared in Penthouse magazine.

7. 1986 - Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson marry at Westminster Abbey

8. 1997 - Serbian President Slobodan Milosevic is sworn in as president of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia

9. 2000 - Tiger Woods becomes the youngest player to bag a career Grand Slam after winning the Open at St. Andrews

10. 2000 - Lance Armstrong wins his second Tour de France

11. 2011 - Amy WInehouse is found dead in her London house
