Five Chelsea players who could surprise us next season

Which players at Stamford Bridge could exceed expectations next season?

Every season there is a select group of players who just surprise you for all the right and wrong reasons.

Chelsea are back in the hands of ‘the Special One’ next season so can Jose Mourinho get something special out of these five players?

Fernando Torres

Obvious I know but seriously if Mourinho cannot get the best out of him then who on earth can?

I mean let’s not forget that beneath this veneer of sulking ineptitude is a striker who thrives on scoring goals.

Chelsea will need his cup form of 2012-13 to transcend into league football next season or it really will be time for him to move on.

John Terry

I personally think that the former England captain had the worst campaign of his career last season with injuries restricting him to just 14 Premier League appearances; and when he did play he was hardly inspiring.

Mourinho has told him he is not assured of a first-team place next term and that might be the motivation to get the 32-year-old back to his best.

Kevin de Bruyne

Many will think that the returning Belgian loanee will be nothing more than a mere bit-part player next season but he was sensational last season and did usurp Eden Hazard in the Belgian national team at one point.

Who is to say he could not punch above his weight at club level next term?

Michael Essien

Discarded by Roberto di Matteo last term the Ghanaian went on to be an important member of the Real Madrid squad under Mourinho.

His dexterity and versatility make him an excellent member of the squad and I am in no doubt he will play a vital role in the first team next season.

Ryan Bertrand

The England international had an enquiry from Liverpool for his services rejected by Chelsea this weekend so he is clearly in the team’s long term plan.

Ashley Cole is now in the final year of his contract and Bertrand will want to be the replacement; but he will have to make inroads next season.

Which of these players will have the biggest impact next season?
