Chelsea may have had a £25million bid for Wayne Rooney rejected out of hand last week, but that doesn’t appear to have dissuaded them from pursuing the England striker. If reports this morning are to be believed, the Blues are considering a £40million offer that Manchester United may find hard to turn down.
With just two years left on his contract, and the prospect of a new one being offered or signed the last thing on either party’s mind, Rooney’s days at Old Trafford appear to be numbered.
If David Moyes can bank such a hefty amount for a player whose value will decrease with every passing transfer window, he may have some thinking to do in the weeks ahead.
Another striker who could be set for Stamford Bridge is Didier Drogba, who Mourinho reportedly believes can play for another three years.
The 35-year-old has one year left on his contract with Galatasaray, and the striker’s agent had previously stated Drogba was happy in Turkey and had rejected the chance to reunite with his former boss.
But just a week later the stories are back, with claims Mourinho will offer the Ivory Coast international a coaching role alongside his playing duties, and that he is prepared to wait until he is a free agent if necessary.
From Chelsea’s past to Chelsea’s future, with the news they have rejected an approach from Liverpool for Ryan Bertrand.
Despite competing with Ashley Cole for a regular left-back role, the 23-year-old has no intention of leaving. In fact he has set his sights on ousting the England international.
“I want to be Chelsea’s number one left-back,” Bertrand said, “and when that time comes it will happen.
“All I can do is be ready and keep playing, keep biding my time. I’m thinking of nothing else.”
With that level of self-belief and focus – along with his undeniable talent – Bertrand is a player Chelsea will surely do everything they can to keep hold of.
