Arsenal are ready to return to Real Madrid for Argentine striker Gonzalo Higuain after Napoli apparently pulled out of the race for the 25-year-old due for the Spanish side’s £35million asking price.
Napoli were favourites to sign Higuain as a replacement for Edinson Cavani, who moved to PSG for £51million last week.
Arsenal looked close to agreeing a £25million deal for Higuain two weeks ago before Real Madrid upped their asking price. However with Napoli ready to give up on the striker, Arsenal might hope to negotiate a lower price with the Spanish club.
Arsenal are also reportedly weighing up a bid for Bayern Munich midfielder Luis Gustavo, who could be deemed surplus to requirements at the Allianz Arena after the Champions League winners completed the signing of Thiago Alcantara.
Arsene Wenger is apparently keen to sign a new defensive midfielder this summer due to Abou Diaby’s injury concerns, and Gustavo could be available for around £15million.
The Brazilian player recently impressed at the Confederations Cup, and might decide to leave Bayern to ensure he plays enough first team football to secure a place in Brazil’s starting eleven at next summer’s world cup.
Arsenal have a first option clause on the Barcelona player, and Wenger have previously indicated he would move for Fabregas if he became available this summer.
Arsenal are ready to bid £10million for Swansea defender Ashley Williams, with the Gunners keen to add some depth to their defensive resources after Thomas Vermaelen was ruled out for three months with a back injury.
Williams has suggested he would be prepared to leave Swansea this summer after spending five years at the Welsh club.
