Despite the slightest of reservations over anomalies on his medical Paris Saint-Germain yesterday completed the £27 million signing of teenage defender Marquinhos from AS Roma.
The 19-year-old has joined on a five-year deal with PSG beating the likes of Manchester United and Barcelona to his coveted signature.
The deal now gives new PSG manager Laurent Blanc the opportunity to pair Marquinhos up with Thiago Silva at the club in a central defensive pairing that would have most of Europe’s big boys purring.
But the deal could be great news for Liverpool.
Despite reports to the contrary at the start of the month it is still widely believed that Liverpool are in the running for Paris Saint-Germain defender Mamadou Sakho.
The 23-year-old has now been moved even further down the pecking order thanks to this new arrival and he has openly discussed his displeasure at not playing enough football last season.
The arrival of Marquinhos is likely to confuse the one time club captain even further; as his fall from first-team action continues ever since the Qatari ownership was confirmed.
Liverpool need defensive cover and have seen moves for Tiago Ilori, Ashley Williams and Kyriakos Papadopoulos fall by the wayside in recent weeks.
With club legend and first team staple Jamie Carragher announcing his retirement from professional football the club needs a long-term solution at the heart of their defence.
Sakho is the perfect player to fill the void. Despite his young age he has been playing regular first-team football since the age of 17 and captained the side as a teenager; this guy is the epitome of leadership.
Not to mention the other less subtle attributes to his game.
He has a similar recover pace that made Carragher so competent a defender in the last ditch situations and is also capable of playing the type of football Brendan Rodgers is desperately trying to install at Anfield.
PSG currently have no need for him so if Liverpool were ever in a better position to make a bid for the player I would like to know when.
He is still likely to cost a fair amount but for what Liverpool would be getting it might just be worth it.
Should Liverpool be chasing Sakho this summer?
