Pre-season: Manchester United win, Southampton bag eight and West Ham lose unbeaten record

A select round-up of Premier League pre-season friendlies including Manchester United, Liverpool, West Ham, Newcastle United, Southampton and Crystal Palace.

Manchester United picked up their first win of the David Moyes era today with a comfortable 5-1 win against an A-League All Star side in Sydney. Two goals apiece from Jesse Lingard and Danny Welbeck got them on their way before Robin van Persie added a fifth; former Burnley striker Besart Berisha grabbed a consolation.

Liverpool were also in action on that side of the world. Philippe Coutinho continued his fine form for the club in pre-season with the opening goal whilst Raheem Sterling also grabbed a goal in a 2-0 victory against an Indonesia XI; the same team Arsenal thrashed 7-0 last week.

Premier League teams who didn’t have it all their own way this Saturday were Newcastle, West Ham and Aston Villa.

The Hammers unbeaten pre-season campaign came crashing down with a defeat against Bundesliga outfit Mainz. Joe Cole scored for Sam Allardyce’s men but goals from Dani Schahin, Nicolai Muller, Shawn Parker and Sebastian Polter gave the Bundesliga team victory.

Newcastle United were also on the wrong side of a bad defeat. Portuguese outfit Rio Ave scored three goals through Ahmed Hassan (2) and Braga whilst Shola Ameobi grabbed the Toon’s consolation goal.

Aston Villa meanwhile visited Adams Park to take on manager Paul Lambert’s former team Wycombe Wanderers. They drew 2-2 with The Chairboys were 2-1 up but a free kick from Ashley Westwood levelled the scoring.

Southampton however were in great form as they bagged eight in a massive victory against Spanish outfit Palamos. Adam Lallana, Morgan Schneiderlin, Jason Puncheon, Jay Rodriguez, Luke Shaw and a hat-trick from Guly do Prado is what gave them the victory.

Crystal Palace also won today. They beat Dagenham and Redbridge 2-1. Medy Elito scored for The Daggers but it was trialist and Austrian under-21 international Atde Nuhiu who got Palace level before Owen Garvan grabbed the winner.
