Five potential Benteke alternatives for Tottenham Hotspur

Roberto Soldado

With their number one target now committed to Aston Villa who could be the striker arrival at White Hart Lane this summer?

Aston Villa striker Christian Benteke has surprised many after agreeing a new contract that will keep him at Aston Villa until 2017.

Ever since recently handing in a transfer request at Villa Park the suggestion has been that there was no chance of hanging onto the Belgian international.

Villa were after £20 million for the player and considering his form last season and his youthful age it was likely they could have convinced someone to pay the fee.

Tottenham Hotspur then became the favourites to land the player and add him to their Belgian contingent.

Now they will have to look elsewhere for a striker, the clubs main positional worry ahead of the new season.

So who could be Spurs’ new number one target?

Gonzalo Higuain

This is something of a howitzer of an idea that I wanted to just throw out there to gauge Spurs’ fans feelings towards the Argentine coming to the club.

The valuation of the striker is constantly changing but one thing that hasn’t changed is his desire to leave.

A dynamic, goal-scoring striker who would relish the chance to be the big fish; plus the chance to get one up on local rivals Arsenal; I am surprised Tottenham haven’t been looking at him all summer.

Leandro Damiao

It wouldn’t be a Spurs striker hunt article without mentioning the Internacional striker.

We all know the story with this guy and I am growing tired of regurgitating the same-old regarding his future as he and his club continue to change the record on his availability.

Loic Remy

QPR could be open to selling the French international and the player himself would likely be keen on an exit.

He will not want to play Championship football in a World Cup year so a move to someone like Spurs could be ideal.

Papiss Cisse

Unhappy at Newcastle United due to their sponsorship by Wonga he recently boycotted the clubs pre-season camp in Portugal.

May not have been firing on all cylinders last season but a fresh start could be just the medicine for his indifference.

Roberto Soldado

The Valencia striker may be the most likely potential signing on the list.

He had an excellent season last year and is reportedly interested in a move to the Premier League.
