Aston Villa and Newcastle United are both keen on signing Lyon’s Bafetimbi Gomis this summer, with the 27-year-old set to leave the French club as he has only one year left on his contract.
Gomis has been linked with Liverpool and Swansea City in the past as well, and could be allowed to leave for around £7million.
The powerful French international could be a fine addition for either side. Gomis scored 16 league goals last season, and has hit double figures in Ligue 1 in each of the past seven seasons.
Aston Villa are seeking reinforcements for their attack with two current strikers, Darren Bent and Christian Benteke, the subject of interest from other clubs.
Newcastle themselves have been linked to Bent, but are also apparently monitoring Gomis, along with Marseille’s Andre Pierre-Gignac.
Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly leading the way for Benteke, who has indicated he would like to leave for the London club this summer, although Villa’s £25million valuation of the Belgian could prove a sticking point for any interested sides.
Newcastle are looking to bolster their attacking options having been left heavily reliant on Papiss Cisse in the second half of last season following Demba Ba’s January move to Chelsea.
Cisse himself could leave the Magpies as the row over their new shirt sponsor escalated this week as the Senegalese player missed Newcastle’s pre-season tour of Portugal due his refusal to wear the shirt.
Along with Gomis, Bent and Gignac, Newcastle have been linked with Loic Remy, who they came close to signing in January before the French player opted for QPR instead.
If either side could sign Gomis for £7million it would be a smart addition in a summer when Premier League sides have struggled to sign their striker targets. Both Newcastle and Villa could lose their current first choice forwards this summer, for very different reasons, but Gomis would be a good replacement for either Papiss Cisse or Christian Benteke.
