Michael Owen loses it on Twitter with 'idiot' fan in Steven Gerrard dig

Owen Goal

Former Liverpool striker Michael Owen lost his temper in a row over Steven Gerrard last night on Twitter.

Michael Owen announced his retirement from football at the end of the season, after a total of eight Premier League appearances from Stoke City in his final sojourn.

The 33-year-old has stated he would like to become an agent in recent times, but a bit of a break from football entirely and Twitter specifically might be best for his stress levels.

Owen was trending on the social network earlier in the week, mocked by thousands of users with the hashtag #michaelowenfacts - one which seemed to come out of nowhere, poking fun at him for, well, being a bit boring.

Last night he started tweeting innocently enough, about his game of five-a-side. We hope he made it through the game unscathed.

But then he began asking for trouble, by naming several players which featured in 'one of' his dream five-a-side teams. Owen played for rivals Manchester United and Liverpool, and so risking inflaming that hornet's nest of vitriol was a mistake he should have seen coming a mile off.

Amusingly he named himself in his first one; on the bench.

Before tweeting a second team. Both of which would be quite formidable if they turned up to your local five-a-side pitch.

But then he began getting quizzed on why his former teammate for Liverpool and England Steven Gerrard was not namechecked.

Owen's defence was that he had posted some of these five-a-side teams before, picking his best overall of the players he has featured alongside, claiming that he did pick Gerrard in that one.

His touchy response saw him brand a fan an 'idiot', who probably had not seen Owen's earlier postings, none of which came last night.

And with that Owen was of to watch the golf. No doubt one fan who once cheered Owen on for England was left bemused as to just how his former hero so quickly insulted him.

Owen probably wished he had never logged on. Again.
