All of the latest news and transfer stories connected to Aston Villa.
Christian Benteke is facing a daunting return to Aston Villa, as he’s due back for pre-season training today. The Belgian recently handed in a transfer request and the club have made it clear they will fine him a week’s wages, roughly £20,000, if he fails to report back for duty.
Paul Lambert faces a very difficult test of his managerial skills if Benteke doesn’t show up, because he can’t push for any fine to be dropped without looking weak but he can’t allow Benteke to do as he pleases while he’s still at the club.
Aston Villa boss Paul Lambert will put in a bid for 27-year-old Bafetimbi Gomis according to reports. The Lyon star has just one-year left to run on his current contract with the French club and he’s been connected with several Premier League sides already this summer.
Lambert has also been linked with moving for another Lyon player, attacking midfielder Jimmy Briand, who found the net just once in 15 appearances last season.
Aston Villa striker Darren Bent may complete a move to Newcastle United in the next few days. Bent has been unable to find regular first team football under Aston Villa and the only hope of him staying comes with the prompt departure of Christian Benteke and a u-turn by the boss.
Brad Guzan has praised the method and approach Paul Lambert uses with the current side. Lambert has sometimes drawn criticism for fielding a younger side and excluding certain players from the line up but Guzan says he gives the players confidence and the belief they can succeed.
Aston Villa will ask for a huge sell on clause to be inserted into any deal they potentially do for Christian Benteke. Tottenham are thought to be leading the race for the Belgian and Villa are demanding 25% of any sell on fee, which could net them a further huge amount of cash.
Goalkeeper Brad Guzan says he’s delighted to be spending the best years of his career at the club. The American shot stopper was in superb form last season and heads into the new campaign as the club’s outright number one goalkeeper as he looks to maintain that form.
Aston Villa defender Jores Okore says he’s settling into life at the club nicely. Villa managed to beat off the likes of Manchester United and Chelsea to sign the talented young defensive player and he says he expects Villa to have a young and exciting team over the next few seasons.
