Fernando Gago is seemingly set to leave Valencia for less than £5million this summer, and although the midfielder reportedly favours a move back to Argentina, several Premier League teams should be considering a move for the 27-year-old.
Arsenal, Manchester City and Chelsea are all apparently on the lookout for a new defensive midfielder this summer, and Gago, with a wealth of experience playing at the top level and a relatively small price-tag, would seem to be an excellent option.
Gago won two La Liga titles during his spell at Real Madrid, and is a regular for the Argentine national team. He spent half of last season on loan from Valencia at Velez Sarsfield in his home country.
The midfielder was expected to make his move back to Argentina permanent this summer, with Boca Juniors the favourites to sign him, but negotiations have apparently broken down, and any of several Premier League sides would be well served by sounding out Gago over the possibility of a move to England.
If the top teams are not interested, perhaps Southampton, with their Argentine manager Mauricio Pochettino, could try and convince Gago to move to the Premier League.
Having recent signed Victor Wanyama, and with Morgan Schneiderlin and Jack Cork already on the books, Saints are not in desperate need of another central midfielder, but the chance to sign someone of Gago’s stature and ability does not come around very often, and Pochettino could give them an edge in a move for the 27-year-old.
Arsenal need some extra steel in the midfield to replace the perennially injured Abou Diaby, whilst Jose Mourinho is looking to add a defensive midfielder to Chelsea’s squad, with John Obi Mikel likely to leave Stamford Bridge this summer.
Manchester City already have several options in that position, but with Gareth Barry now 32, Jack Rodwell always in or around the treatment room, and Javi Garcia failing to impress in his first season, Gago could be a cheap way to ensure they have enough quality in their midfield.
