Manchester United are interested in another high cost centre-back.
24 hours after being told Marquinhos will cost in excess of €25 million, a report has stated the Red Devils will have to pay the same amount for another Serie A star.
The player concerned is Inter Milan's Andrea Ranocchia, who was first linked with a switch to Old Trafford earlier this month.
Football Italia claims they are 'still after' the defender, citing the Express:
"Walter Mazzarri’s side though, are not particularly keen on selling with the 25-year-old but could be tempted by a big-money offer.
"A bid of around €25m could see the San Siro side part ways with the Italy international."
Ranocchia is 25-years-old, one year younger than Ezequiel Garay of Benfica, another target.
The centre-back made 39 appearances for Inter Milan in all competitions last season, picking up 11 yellow cards along the way.
So what to make of these high-price centre-back links?
Looking at the overall picture, it is hard to see United spending that sort of money on Ranocchia.
Their deal for Garay has reportedly stalled over the club being unwilling to pay the €20 million required for his services, although varying reports also claim it has been completed, but there is no firm evidence to suggest this.
If they were going to spend that amount, then Marquinhos would be a wiser option, given his younger age and greater potential.
United are well covered at centre-back with Nemanja Vidic, Rio Ferdinand, Jonny Evans, Phil Jones and Chris Smalling, so you might imagine any bids of €25 million plus will be reserved for the position the club most need strengthening - central midfield.
Would you be happy if United paid that much for Ranocchia? Is this one a no-go?
