Suarez has been very clear that he wants to play Champions League football with Arsenal having already made a bid for him and significant interest from Spanish giants Real Madrid.
However, his inclusion for the pre-season tour of Asia is the best sign yet for Liverpool fans that they’re seeing things with a ‘business as usual’ viewpoint, which is positive for the club’s chances of keeping him.
After his Confederations Cup exploits, it would have been very easy for the club to use 'resting him' as an excuse, but they should be praised for tackling the issue surrounding their star striker head on.
Last season Robin van Persie was left out of Arsenal's pre-season tour after ostracising himself in a similar way, and ended up being sold one week before the season began.
The obvious counter argument to the positive viewpoint are the comments Suarez made himself, where he suggested that a phone call could change everything.
“My agent is in charge, he knows what I want, I am resting and relaxed. I am due back in about ten days, on the 21st of July – a phone call could change everything,” he told Sport 890.
So why exactly is it positive news and how does it give Liverpool a better chance of keeping him?
It’s good news because it gives Rodgers a chance to speak and work with him directly, creating another chance for the boss to convince Suarez that Liverpool can pull off a top four finish.
It’s also positive because it takes him away from the spotlight for a short period of time, at a point in the summer where rumours are flying around left, right and centre with the credibility of several questionable.
Liverpool also have a chance to show how much progress they have made through their summer signings so far. If Liverpool play some superb football and Suarez likes what he sees when he’s included in the side, it has the ability to change his line of thinking.
As for how it gives Liverpool a better chance of keeping him, well it’s a big sign that they are not thinking of listening to Arsenal again any time soon. They are also piling the pressure on the player to make a U-turn and commit to them.
Suarez links up with the rest of the team at a later point and the simple fact he’s been included in the squad suggests Liverpool are not going to listen to increased offers from Arsenal any time soon. The chance to meet up with his teammates may again stir his old emotion of contentment on Anfield which apparently no longer exists.
That suggests that unless Arsenal come to the table with a frankly ridiculous offer, which wouldn’t be in Arsene Wenger’s nature, then it could be pointless of them to play hard ball, trying to get themselves a good deal.
The links to Arsenal suggest his desire to leave Liverpool because of the stick he’s been given in the British media is a little bit of a myth.
It’s all about Champions League football and this news is the first step in getting him to stay and give the team a chance to prove they can compete for European football next season.
How significant do you think his inclusion is?
