Emanuele Giaccherini is close to a move to Sunderland. Who is he?

Sunderland are closing on a deal for Italian attacker Emanuele Giaccherini as manager Paolo di Canio continues his spending spree.

The transfer is expected to net Juventus club £8.5 million, and a deal is expected to be completed in the coming days.

Giuseppe Marotta, Juventus' general manager, said: "In Giaccherini's transfer to Sunderland, the will of the player had priority over the club's.

"Emanuele evaluated, not only the economic aspects, but also the standing he will have at Sunderland, and it was a challenge he decided to accept. We have gone along with his wishes."

So who is he and what do Sunderland fans need to know about him? 

Here are five facts about Giaccherini...

1) Giaccherini is an attacking midfielder who played the majority of his football last season on Juventus' left-wing, making 10 starts and 11 substitute appearances.

2) The 28-year-old is a full international for Italy, with 14 caps and two goals to his name, making three starts at this summer's Confederations Cup, scoring against Brazil.

3) Giaccherini is the scorer of the fastest goal in Italian international history, netting after just 20 seconds against Haiti this summer.

4) Earlier in his career at Cesena - who he joined Juventus from in a £6.3 million deal, Giaccherini partnered Southampton forward Guly do Prado in attack.

5) He is a two-time Serie A winner and Coppa Italia winner, and also has a Euro 2012 runners-up medal for his involvement in the Italy team which took him them to the final.
