5. 1969 - The Apollo 11 space rocket takes off from Cape Kennedy at the start of the first attempt to land a man on the Moon

6. 1970 - The British Home Secretary Reginald Maudling declares a state of emergency to deal with dock strikes

7. 1979 - Saddam Hussein becomes President of Iraq

8. 1993 - Britain's internal security service, MI5, holds the first photocall in its 84-year history

9. 1999 - John F. Kennedy, Jr., his wife Carolyn Bessette and her sister Lauren, die in a plane crash near Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts

10. 2001 - The Labour Government is defeated in the House of Commons for the first time since it came to power in 1997
