Manchester United's failure to net Thiago Alcantara certainly asks questions regarding their next move, and they may want to cast their eye on rivals Chelsea's transfer target.
A year after affirming his commitment to Roma, Italian international midfielder Daniele de Rossi is said to be up for sale by Roma, at a cut price £11 million.
De Rossi played more of a bit-part role last season than ever before, making just 21 starts out of a possible 38 in Serie A.
He turns 30 in nine days time, and this could be one of his last chances to move to a big club in his prime, and for Roma to cash in.
Chelsea have been actively pursuing a move, for a player Jose Mourinho has long admired, and Manchester United could do far worse than try to muscle in on the combative midfielder.
De Rossi may not be the young exciting player Thiago Alcantara was, but he is a savvy, experienced and talented central midfielder whose game is suited to the Premier League.
Having just turned 30, he will be the same age as Robin van Persie, who celebrates his birthday two weeks later, and nobody would suggest the Dutchman is past it.
If De Rossi is still good enough for Chelsea to be looking at, clearly he should be on Manchester United's radar too. In fact he could even be the difference between the two sides at the end of the season.
Having already missed out on Marco van Ginkel to Chelsea, allowing them a free run at another top class central midfielder would be a real mistake.
De Rossi certainly would not be a long-term solution, but he has three to four years left in him at the top level.
Which would take the pressure of David Moyes' search for a 'big name' and give him more time to focus on signing the next world class talent like Thiago in future seasons when one becomes available.
Whether United do move for De Rossi is questionable, but considering his bargain price and what he could bring to the side, they really should consider it.
