Not disastrous but when do Manchester United panic?

Thiago Alcantara

Manchester United are still chasing their first summer signing.

Manchester United have missed out on Thiago Alcantara, with the Spaniard signing a deal with Bayern Munich.

There is no getting away from it, the snub is a big blow.

Thiago is a genuine world class midfielder, who Barcelona had earmarked as a long-term replacement for Xavi.

The fact Pep Guardiola is planning on restructuring his whole Bayern Munich team to accommodating him speaks volumes about the player's talent.

United fans had placed their hopes on bringing him aboard, and now have to question which direction their transfer plans are headed this summer.

A number of players have been mooted as alternatives, Marouane Fellaini, Kevin Strootman, and Antonio Candreva to name three, but whether they can snap up one of them remains to be seen.

United fans are quickly becoming used to failed high profile pursuits. For Thiago, also see Mesut Ozil, Wesley Sneijder and Lucas Moura - Each in consecutive seasons.

The Premier League season begins in one month's time, and the Red Devils will want to have a marquee new addition on board beforehand.

Some fans may be having a slight panic over a failure to sign Thiago, and it's true they will struggle to sign a midfielder with as much potential, but they can still make very strong additions - see the names referenced above.

But if they have not made them prior to the season kicking off, then will it be the time for fans to worry?

United do not usually leave their transfer business late, not in recent seasons. Indeed Shinji Kagawa, Phil Jones, Ashley Young and David de Gea were all signed over the past two years before the month on July.

Perhaps fans don't panic at all. It should be remembered that United are the Premier League champions, and Moyes should take a good look at the squad at his disposal first before chopping and changing too much.

Main rivals City and Chelsea have made additions, but not of the world class Cavani or Falcao quality which had been touted. So there is a case for not over-panicking even if it reaches the season start with no new big names.

Ferguson though instilled a belief that the club must keep evolving to move forward, and that is why fans will worry if there are no headline additions.

The question is, when will you worry? Will you at all? Are you worrying now?
