Making Kinect as costly as Xbox One console

Microsoft employee reveals that camera peripheral is a pricey bonus.

The interactive high-definition camera that comes as standard with every Xbox One costs nearly as much as the main console to make, according to one Microsoft employee.

While under the safety of anonymity the source was verified as a Microsoft employee by moderators at Reddit, where the revelations around the cost of the camera and the company's though process were made.

"The majority of the masses care only about the console. Except that the success of the Kinect carries much more weight to us," the employee explained, adding: "The sensor costs almost as much as the console to make."

According to the post, Microsoft is willing to bite the bullet and ship the cameras out as an integral part of the Xbox One in order to encourage developers to make use of it, knowing that any features they invest in will be available to all console owners.

The anonymous poster continued: "I often see people dismiss the Kinect instantly because they haven't seen it work like I have. It is an integral part of the Xbox One experience."

When talking about the now infamous DRM U-turn, the Xbox One developer echoed Microsoft executive Marc Whitten's disappointment around how the company communicated to fans.

"Personally I was a little surprised at the timeframe which we decided on the DRM reversal," they wrote. "I thought we didn't push on its benefits enough."
