Club captain Steven Gerrard has signed a contract extension which commits him to Liverpool until 2015.
The 33-year-old told the club's website: "I think everyone knows what it means to me.
"I've been here that long and so to extend, it's a big day for me and I'm really happy for myself and my family. It's great news. It lets me know the club thinks an awful lot of me and want me here. I'm glad it's all done and it's happened at the right time before the season, so I can just focus on playing as well as I can."
Manager Brendan Rodgers said: "I've talked throughout pre-season about wanting to bring other players into the group, but this was one of - if not the- most important signings for us."
In transfer news, Liverpol have been linked with signing Xherdan Shaqiri from Bayern Munich.
Shaqiri is a highly rated Swiss international who only signed last summer, but found himself a bit-part player. With the German giants securing the signing of Thiago Alcantara yesterday, his chances are expected to be even more limited.
The 21-year-old was part of the Basel side which knocked Manchester United out of the Champions League in 2010/11.
Ajax whizkid Christian Eriksen has been tipped for a move to Liverpool, by none other than his current coach Frank de Boer who says he will not stand in his way.
"But we realise the interest in this kind of player is huge. And I can also understand that he wants to make another step in his career. I can't stop him."
However the Danish starlet told the Dutch media that if no offers are incoming then he is willing to sign a new contract, rather than harm Ajax by walking away on a free transfer next summer.
He said: "If there is no club that comes then I don’t have any problem extending my contract."
