Tottenham Hotspur have been linked with midfielder Bernard for some time. And yesterday, his current club’s president revealed he had received bids from five unnamed sides for the 20-year-old – one of which is believed to be Spurs.
And yet newspaper O Tempo is now reporting that Arsenal are set to join the race for the precocious Brazilian.
The story claims the Gunners have compiled an extensive scouting report on the Atletico Mineiro player, and are readying an offer close to the club’s €25million asking price.
To be gazumped by anyone is a sickener; but to be gazumped by your biggest rivals is a far worse proposition.
One player Spurs do appear to be in the box-seat for is Christian Benteke, a player for whom they are readying a £20million offer.
The Aston Villa striker has already requested a transfer, and Spurs are hoping a sizeable bid next week will secure the 22-year-old Belgian.
Previous stories claimed Villa will hold out for between £25 and £30million, but it is unlikely that any of the interested parties will go that high.
Paul Lambert’s side have also said they will accept a straight cash-bid only, and are not prepared to take any players in a swap deal that reduces the fee. Unless, one supposes, the player in question is Gareth Bale…
One player seemingly on his way out of White Hart Lane is Tom Huddlestone, who is reportedly close to a £5million move to Sunderland.
The Black Cats have been given permission to talk to the midfielder, and while he will have to accept reduced wages, that is not anticipated to be a major problem.
