Just as the announcement was made that Wayne Rooney would be out for a month with a hamstring injury, reports were growing that Manchester United were considering a bid for Stevan Jovetic.
The Fiorentina striker has long been linked with Arsenal, before Manchester City apparently took the box-seat for his signature. But it is now being claimed David Moyes will match any City offer for the 23-year-old, and that a final round of talks will take place between the player and both clubs before he makes a decision.
This one is a little left-field. But until Jovetic makes a move one way or the other we will treat it as we do every other transfer rumour – a possibility with a hefty pinch of salt.
Should Rooney still leave, Moyes will surely move for a new striker and, despite previous (emphatic) assertions to the contrary, some media outlets are still claiming the England man could be on his way. Or at least that he wants to be.
Stories this morning suggest the 27-year-old still has every intention of quitting the champions, with Chelsea believing they are favourites for his signature.
One player United have long been tracking is Southampton’s Luke Shaw. But the 17-year-old left-back is set to sign a new contract with the Saints – reportedly as early as today.
With a bid already turned down for Leighton Baines, and with Patrice Evra not getting any younger, it will be interesting to see who is United’s left-back of choice in the years to come.
