Given Liverpool’s lack of European football next season, it will be very hard for them to get close to finding a player of Luis Suarez’s standard should the Uruguayan be sold this summer.
However Brendan Rodgers has already taken steps to ensure the team are not left in the lurch should Suarez leave, with Luis Alberto and Iago Aspas joining January signings Daniel Sturridge and Philippe Coutinho in boosting Liverpool’s attack.
These players all have plenty of technical ability, but the one thing they might not be able to replace is the sheer weight of goals Suarez scored last season, and that is where Galatasaray’s Burak Yilmaz might step in.
The Turkish striker has drawn plenty of interest after scoring 32 goals in 39 appearances last season, including eight in the Champions League where he netted in six games in a row as Galatasaray made the quarter-finals.
Galatasaray have indicated they would be prepared to sell Yilmaz at the right price this summer, but considering he is 27, the £20+million figure that has been mentioned could be considered too costly an outlay for Liverpool.
However if Suarez leaves they will likely have over £40million to play with, and if Yilmaz is deemed to right man to get the goals for Brendan Rodgers’ side next season, then it could be worth paying a little over the odds.
Another man they will be considering is Aston Villa’s Christian Benteke, who turned in a supreme performance at Anfield as Liverpool were beaten 3-1 last season. Benteke’s two goals and sublime back-heeled assist left no doubt among Liverpool fans of his talent, and if he is available at a similar price to Yilmaz, then the Belgian could be the preferred option.
However the benefits of Yilmaz’ experience should not be underrated, and whilst Benteke has to prove he can replicate his scoring feats of last season, the Turkish player has scored 87 times in the last three years.
Liverpool fans, what do you think? Would Yilmaz be a good replacement for Luis Suarez?
