Arsenal transfer news: Kondogbia and Williams on the radar

Arsenal v Dortmund

A select round-up of transfer rumours relating to Arsenal, including Geoffrey Kondogbia, Ashley Williams, Luis Suarez and Joel Campbell.

Arsenal have reportedly revived their interest in Sevilla midfielder Geoffrey Kondogbia, who could be allowed to leave the Spanish club this summer due to their financial troubles.

The 20-year-old has also been linked with Chelsea and Real Madrid this summer, but with the Blues apparently looking at Daniele De Rossi, and Madrid close to agreeing a deal for Asier Illarremendi, Arsenal might be front runners for Kondogbia.

The defensive midfielder enjoyed a breakthrough season last year, becoming a regular with Sevilla and impressing and the Under-20 World Cup with France.

Arsenal are ready to return to Liverpool with an improved bid for striker Luis Suarez, having seen their opening offer of £30million turned down last week. The Gunners have grown frustrated with their prolonged pursuit of Gonzalo Higuain, and might aim to bring in Suarez instead of the Real Madrid forward.

Liverpool are expected to resist offers even if they rise to £40million, but if that figure is reached they would have to inform Suarez of the interest, with the risk that the Uruguayan could be unhappy at having his aspirations of playing for a Champions League side blocked.

Arsenal are set to step up their interest in Swansea City defender Ashley Williams after Thomas Vermaelen was ruled out of the start of the season with a back injury.

Williams has been a reported target for Arsenal all summer, but Arsene Wenger was put off my Swansea’s £10million asking price, and Vermaelen was set to be given another chance at the Emirates instead of a move for the Welsh defender.

However with Vermaelen to miss Arsenal’s pre-season tour Wenger could be short of options having seen Sebastien Squillaci and Johan Djourou leave this summer, and the Gunners could rekindle their interest in Williams as a result.

Joel Campbell’s proposed return to Real Betis on loan has collapsed, with the Spanish side blaming Arsenal’s demands for the player. The 21-year-old spent last season on loan at Betis, but they are unwilling to pay a £750,000 fee to take Campbell again this year.
