England are just edging ahead of Australia in the first Ashes Test as day three gets underway at Trent Bridge. England have resumed their second innings looking to build a big lead over the Aussies before unleashing their attack as they look to go 1-0 up in the five game series.

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney may miss the start of the season after flying home from the club’s pre-season tour with an injury. Rooney has a hamstring problem, describing himself as ‘gutted’ after he started pre-season training so well under new United boss David Moyes.

Southampton have completed the signing of Celtic midfielder Victor Wanyama in a deal worth £12.5 million. The midfielder had been linked with possible moves to Manchester United and Arsenal but he says he chose the Saints because of their ambition.

Jessica Ennis-Hill has withdrawn from the British Championships this weekend due to injury. The 27-year-old is struggling with an ankle injury and has been withdrawn in a bid to be fit for the World Championships which start in Moscow in the middle of next month.

Marcel Kittel edged out British cyclist Mark Cavendish in the twelfth stage of the Tour de France. The German flew through the pack in the closing stages with Cavendish unable to respond stating: “You can analyse it, but when there is someone simply faster than you there is nothing you can do.”
