Andi Foster takes a look at transfer rumours involving Arsenal, Liverpool, West Ham, Aston Villa, Chelsea, Tottenham, Newcastle United and Manchester City.
So the transfer window has now been officially open for more than a week and there has been some movement from, well, the clubs that you would expect movement from. Arsenal have signed a young French striker with bags of potential who may or may not be the next (insert your own stereotype here) or could just as easily end up with a ward named after him at the medical centre. City have signed yet another attacking midfielder at a cost equivalent to paying the yearly salary of 1000 policeman, Chelsea have raided Germany to complete one of the most drawn out (and dullest) moves in history and Liverpool have already spent the vast majority of their Suarez money on a selection of players who will prove very quickly to be better value than the vast majority of Dalglish’s signings (which in fairness isn’t that hard)
The newly promoted clubs have all started strengthening with a selection of youngsters, veterans, cast offs and hopefuls arriving (smart money is still on 2/3 being relegated though) whilst in the Championship Wigan have started to pull together a squad that could challenge for the Championship title – once Martinez has finished taking players to Everton. Oh – and Wycombe have signed someone as well!
But what about the transfers that are yet to take place? What are the papers saying? And is there any truth in any of the rumours? Let’s have a look at some of the biggest stories from the last week.
Suarez is a talented player. There is no question about that. And there has been some serious talk about a move to Arsenal over the last few days. At first – I thought it was utter rubbish but evidently there is some genuine interest from Arsenal in him as the Higuain deal is stalling. However something worth mentioning is that the quotes from Suarez about Arsenal (that are being used on most sites) originally do not mention Arsenal at all. The statement has been altered (as this story explains). Also don’t forget that Suarez has previously said that he wants to get away from the media in this country and the fact that he has the potential to cause a lot of trouble (liability springs to mind). There is some real interest – but I don’t think it will happen. Suarez will be leaving Liverpool though and my money is on him going to Madrid with Higuain then moving to Arsenal.
I don’t think Downing’s move to Liverpool has worked out how Downing or Liverpool would have wanted. The price was massive and he was instantly under a lot of pressure to perform (which unfortunately he hasn’t). The West Ham link is an interesting one – because I’d imagine that they would definitely be interested if he was available (as would a host of other clubs). But Liverpool would have to take a massive loss on him as they did with Carroll. Something like this could well happen later in the window - but it won’t be yet.
Last season Benteke was seen as a hero at Villa Park. In the last few days however his standing has changed considerably after he handed in a transfer request and refused to sign a new deal. Tottenham are said to be interested as are Chelsea. It doesn’t take a genius to work out that Arsenal and City won’t be far behind either. But the reports say that the player favours a move to Tottenham – whilst Villa feel that they will get a better deal for him by selling him to Chelsea (a thought process that is certainly not beyond the realms of possibility). He will be leaving – that much is for certain. But Villa have stood their ground waiting for valuations to be met before (see Barry)… and they are more than capable of playing hardball. His signing wont come cheap and it won’t come easily. But there are a number of clubs in the Premiership that could do with and are on the hunt for a powerful striker. Villa know that. I can see him ending up at Chelsea and not getting his Spurs wish. Don’t count out other suitors though…..
Pellegrini has already said that he is on the lookout for a forward now that Tevez has gone. Fiorentina have just signed Mario Gomez whilst Sevilla have just signed Carlos Bacca – so in theory both players could be available – but they both play in slightly different positions. City already have a strong relationship with Fiorentina thanks to the Savic transfer, whilst Negredo is well known to Pellegrini as well as new signing Navas. So both are realistic options. There is a bit of talk suggesting that City could sign both to complement the options that they already have at the club – but for a line-up like that to work City would need to dispose of some of the attacking midfielders already at the club – especially now that Fernandinho and Navas have signed on. Silva and Nasri could well be likely departures - but I think that the most likely move from City will be for Jovetic.
If I’m completely honest – I forgot that Sinclair was at City! But ok – the story goes that Newcastle are keen to buy some British players to add to their French contingent. Sinclair is of interest as is Alex McCarthy of Reading. Sinclair will be after first team football and McCarthy will have an eye on cementing a place in the England squad – so a move to Newcastle for both would make sense. There will be a lot of interest in both players however so nothing is guaranteed – I also have a sneaking suspicion that Arsenal could well be interested in McCarthy to enhance their own British core….
